Rambler Rebel (front) - 2007/08
Automotive-grade sheet aluminum.
Approximate dimensions 8' x 6'
The Rambler Rebel consists of one form that resembles
unfolded and flattened origami. The form corresponds to what is arguably
the first “compact” car made in North America, and shares
the same dimensions: 100” x 100” (equals approximately the
wheel base of the original car flattened) with a 10 inch depth. The
form is constructed from automotive-grade sheet aluminum, a surface
material available from Home Depot, which is specifically used to cover
and repair the auto bodies of cars. The topside of the car is painted
with glossy automotive paint, illustrating the blueprint of what the
car would look like if assembled. The Rambler Rebel project is displayed
rotating on a platform to suggest a “car showroom”: an aestheticised
object, “auto-couture”.
